What is Kosher?

Kosher is a part of the Judaic culture and based upon Hebrew dietary laws which outline what foods may be eaten; what foods may be eaten together, and how those foods are to be prepared. Food is divided into 3 categories: meat, dairy, and pareve (everything else). Meat and dairy can never be mixed together. Certain foods such as pork and shellfish are considered not kosher. Other foods can never be mixed due to their symbolic meanings. Processing of kosher foods has strict guidelines for preventing contamination and ensuring cleanliness. All ingredients and the method of processing must be approved by a Rabbi as kosher before a product can display the kosher symbol.
